No Jam Tomorrow

If you've looked over the side of Smallbridge lately, up to Beat 1, you'll have noticed a serius muddle of fallen willows and collected debris causing quite a jam there. This wasn't doing much for the flow, or the fishing, but it was a bit of a tricky proposition to sort it out.

Undaunted, Tony, Nigel and I decided to abseil down and balance on the logs as we sytematically cut them away. It wasn't quite as hairy as it sounds, but there was one scary moment when the main tree swung upstream as we cut away a big dead branch wedged between the trunk and the bank. Luckily we'd both opted to stand downstream at that point.
We stacked a lot of the logs in a berm on one bank, and the rest were hauled up and strategically placed to discourage further access there. We'll see how it goes, but it certainly looks very different now.

If we ever do get any serious rain again, we can at least be sure that we'll have no jam there tomorrow.
Cheers
